Saving the Southern Purple-Spotted Gudgeon

Help us create new habitat for the nationally Endangered Southern Purple-Spotted Gudgeon by supporting our Indigenous‑led Yedabila Habitat Pod program.

C) Gunther Schmida

Across northern Victoria, this small, colourful native fish has lost much of the habitat it needs to survive. Storm damage, erosion and the decline of aquatic plants have left waterways more exposed, making it harder for the gudgeon to feed and move safely through its environment. For a species already under pressure, these changes can be the difference between recovery and decline.

Our Yedabila Habitat Pods offer a simple, effective way to rebuild what’s been lost. Each pod is constructed using traditional weaving techniques and provides instant underwater structure – places for Southern Purple-Spotted Gudgeon and other small‑bodied native fish to shelter, forage and avoid predators. Over time, the pods naturally break down and are replaced by new vegetation, leaving behind long‑term habitat that strengthens the whole waterway.

By donating, you’re helping us build and install more pods in the areas that need them most. Your support goes directly into materials, construction, installation days and ongoing monitoring with local schools and community groups.

Together, we can restore healthy habitat and give this awesome little fish the chance to bounce back.
