Planting the Seed Program Grant

15 October 2023

Eco Warriors Australia is excited to announce that, in partnership with Ecology and Restoration Australia, we have received a grant for the Planting the Seed program from Murrindindi Shire Council.

ERA will help to revegetate a Land for Wildlife site located next to Buxton Primary School in Buxton. Buxton PS staff, students and the local school community have already carried out some revegetation, installed a frog pond and made some fabulous signs for the native vegetation at their Land for Wildlife area, so we will be building on their hard work.

Students from Buxton PS (prep to Year 6) will be taught how to collect native plant cuttings/seeds, propagate and care for seedlings, use native plants to revegetate sites and maintain their site post-revegetation. Students will use simple data collection tools to monitor revegetation success.

A big thanks to Buxton PS for their support with this project.

Please see our FAQ or contact us if your school would like to get involved.

Wildlife Rope Bridge Workshops

We recently completed four wildlife rope bridge building workshops with the wonderful students at Healesville Primary School.

We worked with students in grades 3-6 and managed to build almost 100m of rope bridge. These rope bridges will be installed in storm damaged areas in the Yarra Ranges – see more about this project here. Great work everyone!

Wildlife Habitat Pod Grant

6 August 2024

We are excited to announce that, in partnership with Ecology and Restoration Australia (ERA), we recently received funding from Maroondah City Council for our latest project, wildlife habitat pods.

Small ground mammals, reptiles, and amphibians are vulnerable to predation following habitat loss through natural disasters such as flood and fire. Our habitat pods are designed to offer wildlife short to medium term refuge and additional habitat within Maroondah’s existing nature reserves.

This project will give Maroondah residents an opportunity to directly contribute to protecting our native wildlife in a fun and interactive way. The workshops will also aim to raise community awareness around issues such as habitat loss and the challenges facing our native wildlife in a changing climate.

Keep an eye on our socials for details about upcoming community workshops.

Planting the Seed Program Grant

14 July 2023

Eco Warriors Australia is excited to announce that, in partnership with Ecology and Restoration Australia, we have received a grant for the Planting the Seed program from Hepburn Shire Council.

ERA will help to revegetate an area of damaged roadside vegetation along Bullarto South Road, about halfway between Daylesford and Trentham.  Bullarto South Primary School is a small school so we will be working with the whole school, with students from prep to Year 6. We will teach students how to collect native plant cuttings/seeds, propagate and care for seedlings, use native plants to revegetate sites and maintain their site post-revegetation. Students will use simple data collection tools to monitor revegetation success.

A big thanks to Hepburn Shire Council, Bullarto South PS and Wombat Native Plants for their support with this project.

Planting the Seed program

Helping schoolchildren to create a living classroom.

Eco Warriors Australia, in partnership with Ecology & Restoration Australia, is excited to announce a new program that we are running called Planting the Seed (PtS).

The PtS program gives school students hands-on experience in revegetating areas of degraded or damaged native vegetation.  Students also learn about the cultural heritage values of the plants and animals at their site and in the local area.

The PtS program teaches students how to collect local native plant seeds, propagate and care for seedlings, prepare sites for planting, use native plants to revegetate sites and maintain sites after planting to ensure success.

Students use simple data collection tools to monitor revegetation success, and to record wildlife that the native vegetation attracts (“citizen science”).

The PtS program is innovative in several ways:

  • Students are involved in the entire process of revegetation, rather than only including students at the planting stage
  • Focus on sustainability throughout the project (eg. using recycled materials for plant propagation to reduce waste)
  • Strong cultural heritage focus to provide a link and improve understanding of the cultural history of native plants and wildlife found in the local area.

Please see our FAQ or contact us if your school would like to get involved.

Bridging the Gaps: Wildlife Rope Bridges for Native Arboreal Marsupials in Storm Impacted Habitat

We are thrilled to share that we have successfully secured funding from the Yarra Ranges Grants for Community 2023 round to undertake a really exciting project which will result in the installation of wildlife canopy bridges in storm damaged areas of the Yarra Ranges.

We are delighted to be partnering with our friends at Ecology & Restoration Australia on this project, who already have multiple similar projects ongoing. Their expertise in the scientific design aspects of the project, and provision of experienced arborists to install the bridges, will be invaluable.

The most exciting aspect of this project will be the input of the community in multiple ways, from helping to build sections of the canopy bridges, to helping to process images and identify animals on monitoring cameras.

Fauna canopy rope bridges will be made of biodegradable natural rope and utilise an easy knotting design that anyone can do (c) Ecology & Restoration Australia

Rope bridges will be of a simple design that anyone can help to create – you can read more about this process here, through the ERA website.

We will be liaising with council and Parks Victoria to determine the sites that will benefit from the installation of rope bridges; species which may benefit from the bridges, depending on location, include the endangered Southern Greater Glider, the critically endangered Leadbeater’s Possum, the vulnerable Brush-tailed Phascogale and Eastern Pygmy-Possums.
