Planting the Seed Update – Yering Planting Days

8 May 2025

We had a very busy couple of weeks planting with our five Yering Billabong primary schools. Their hard work meant that we planted about 1.5km of Olinda Creek frontage – a big thanks to all our schools for a truly fantastic effort. Check out the photos and video!

We’d like to thank DEECA’s Greenlinks grants for generously funding our Planting the Seed program, and our project partners at Yarra Ranges Council and Ecology and Restoration Australia. We’d also like to thank the Wurundjeri Narrap Rangers team for all their help with our planting days – a big thanks to Yolanda and her awesome team!

Please see our FAQ or contact us if your school would like to get involved.

Planting the Seed – Kerang

29 May 2025

We are excited to announce that we have received funding from the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal to run our Planting the Seed program with students in Kerang.

We will be working with students from Kerang South Primary School to revegetate North Street Reserve in Kerang. The project will enhance the biodiversity values of the Reserve and also help protect the native Chocolate Lily which grows in the Reserve.

Lyn Veall, Principal of Kerang South Primary School, says that the experience the children will gain from the project will broaden their education and help create stronger connections with the local environment. Traditional Owner representative Kai, who runs the Planting the Seed cultural heritage sessions, is a past Kerang South students, and is extremely excited to be working with his old school!

We’d like to thank the FRRR Strengthening Rural Communities grant program for generously funding our project, Gannawarra Shire Council’s Infrastructure and Development team and project partners Ecology and Restoration Australia.

Planting the Seed – Ardeer

14 November 2024

We are excited to announce that we have received funding from Brimbank City Council to run our Planting the Seed program with students from Ardeer Primary School.

We will be working with students to revegetate “Verdant Woodlands”, an area adjacent to Kororoit Creek, with the aim to create additional habitat and connections for local wildlife along the Kororoit Creek. Students will have the opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal culture and heritage through our cultural heritage sessions, and learn how to connect with and care for our environment using wisdom from indigenous cultures through the Wayapa Wuurrk wellbeing program.

John Mifsud, Principal of Ardeer Primary School, says that “the “Planting the Seed” program… will provide invaluable educational experiences for students while contributing to the restoration and conservation of local
native vegetation”. John believes that the program will have lasting positive impacts on the students, the local community and the environment.

We’d like to thank Brimbank Council’s Community Climate Emergency
Grants program for generously funding our project, Brimbank Council’s bushland team and project partners Ecology and Restoration Australia.

Planting the Seed – Wandin North

14 November 2024

We are excited to announce that we have received funding from the Yarra Ranges Council to run our Planting the Seed program with Wandin North Primary School.

Our Planting the Seed program will work directly with students from Wandin North Primary School to teach them about the revegetation process and their local environment. The program will take place at Picnic Hill Bushland Reserve, opposite the school.

Laura Attrill runs the Wandin North Primary School Sustainability Leader’s program. Laura sees our PtS program as a valuable learning experience in restoring the reserve and feels that it will give students a sense of custodianship over the reserve, leading to an ongoing desire to maintain and connect with the land on a deeper level. Thanks for your ongoing support Laura, we really appreciate it!

We’d like to thank the Yarra Ranges Council Annual Community Grants Program for generously funding our project, Yarra Ranges Council’s bushland team and project partners Ecology and Restoration Australia.

Wildlife Rope Bridges – Yarra Ranges

6 Aug 2024

We are excited to announce that we have received funding from Victorian Landcare to construct wildlife rope bridges with the Yarra Ranges community.

Recent storm damage and fuel break construction has left sections of the Yarra Ranges National Park with large gaps in the canopy. These gaps can represent a significant movement barrier for tree-dwelling wildlife and leave them vulnerable to predation and being hit by cars where there are roads nearby. Wildlife rope bridges can help arboreal wildlife to cross areas where there are large gaps in the canopy.

Volunteers from the local community will create sections of simple flat rope bridge in a series of eight community workshops. Ecologists and arborists from our partner Ecology and Restoration Australia, in collaboration with Parks Victoria, will install the bridges in key fuel break/storm-affected locations in the Yarra Ranges National Park.

We’d like to thank the Victorian Landcare grants for generously funding our project, and our project partners at Parks Victoria and Ecology and Restoration Australia.

We’d like to thank DEECA’s Greenlinks grants for generously funding our Planting the Seed program, and our project partners at Yarra Ranges Council and Ecology and Restoration Australia.

Wildlife Habitat Pods

We recently ran two sessions with the local community in Maroondah to build wildlife habitat pods for small animals such as frogs and lizards.

The sessions were a lot of fun and a great opportunity to learn about local wildlife.  Community members-built habitat pods from clay, with some very creative decorations!

We recently installed the habitat pods to create additional habitat in Warrien Reserve, Croydon and Scott St Reserve, Heathmont and will monitor the pods. Stay tuned!

Many thanks to Maroondah Council for their support for our project though their Community grants program, and to our project partners at Ecology and Restoration Australia

Planting the Seed program – Update 2024

10 May 2024

We have had a busy time recently with our Planting the Seed Program planting days and cultural heritage sessions, which we run in partnership with Ecology and Restoration Australia (ERA).

We had a very successful planting day at the Mentone foreshore with students from Kilbreda College, and other busy day with students from Bullarto South Primary School, near Daylesford. Check out our before and after shots below! Thanks to all the staff and students who worked so hard on the day, and to Kingston City Council and Hepburn Shire Council for all their help. A big thanks to Junior Landcare, Port Phillip Bay Fund and Hepburn Shire Council for funding our Planting the Seed program.

Kai also ran some wonderful sessions on Indigenous cultural heritage, talking about his cultural background as well as traditional uses for plants and animals. Students had a lot of fun using traditional Aboriginal symbols to communicate their own stories.

Wildlife Rope Bridge Update, Yarra Ranges

13 December 2023

Our project partners at Ecology and Restoration Australia recently installed close to 100 metres of rope bridge in storm affected vegetation in the Yarra Ranges Shire.  The bridges will connect remaining canopy, meaning that arboreal marsupials like possums and gliders don’t need to come down to the ground as much, where they are at risk from predators.

The wildlife rope bridges were built by members of the community and students from Healesville Primary School, as part of our wildlife rope bridge project in partnership with Yarra Ranges Council. Please see here for more details on this project.

Stay tuned for the results of camera monitoring to see who uses these “canopy highways”.
